The next session of the seminar Fashion, clothing and costumes: the constitution of a museum heritage will be held on Wednesday, March 26, 2025 at 6:15 pm (Walter Benjamin room, ground floor of INHA).
We will receive:
(i) Céline Chanas, Chief Curator of Heritage, Director of the Musée de Bretagne
Céline Chanas’ communication From costume to clothing: history of the collections of the Musée de Bretagne. Collections and acquisitions, museography and exhibitions» aims to address the history of the clothing collections of the Musée de Bretagne which constitute one of the richest areas. As a museum of society, it is the heir to a long tradition, that of the museums of ethnography who have collected and valued these artifacts since the end of the 19th century. From the origins to current perspectives, it will be a matter of proposing a reading of these collections through the prism of issues of study and research but also of narratives and discourses to propose to the public.
(ii) Françoise David, Head of the Research and Exhibitions sector at the Museon Arlaten – musée de Provence.
Françoise David will return in her intervention “Collection and museography of costume at the Museon Arlaten (19th – 20th century): a question of cultural claim” on the creation of the museum in a regionalist context, its position at the heart of a process of safeguarding, but also of fixing and inventing the traditional costume. A moment that will also be an opportunity to discuss the renovation of the museum and the scenographic issues specific to Arles costume.
This research seminar is part of the research program Fashion at the museum: a French history carried by the Junior Professor Fashion Heritage of the University Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne.
